What is the medicine used for?

Sulfanilamide is an antibacterial medicine and belongs to a class of medicines called “sulfa drugs”. It is effective against bacteria and not against viruses. It should, therefore, not be used to treat viral infections such as the common cold.

How to take this medicine?
- Sulfanilamide comes in the form of creams and tablets to be inserted into the vagina.
- You should apply the cream to the outer areas of the vagina.
- You should insert the tablet into the vagina using an applicator. Before applying, wash your hands, clean your private parts properly, and dry with a clean towel. Insert tablet by lying on your back and raising your knees to your shoulder level. Then gently push the tablet into the vagina with the applicator.
- It should be used once daily or twice daily, depending on what your healthcare provider instructs. If it is used once daily, it is preferable to use it at night before you sleep.
- If you miss a dose, use it when you remember. However, do not use two doses at the same time.
- Do not take this medicine by mouth.
- You can use the medicine during your menstruation.
- Do not have sex throughout the treatment.

What are the side-effects?
Sulfanilamide does not cause many side effects because it is used on the outside of the body. It may cause:
- Irritation of the vagina area.
- Rashes.
- Itching.
- If you are allergic to any "sulfa drug", you will most likely react to Sulfanilamide too.

What to know before taking this medicine?
- You should use this medicine for the period instructed by your healthcare provider. Otherwise, the infection may come back and be more severe.
- Inform your healthcare provider if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal medicines.
- If you have been allergic to sulfa drugs, you should not use this medicine.
- If you are pregnant, plan to get pregnant or are breastfeeding, inform your healthcare provider. However, it is unlikely that there will be any side effects.
- Inform your healthcare provider if you have other health conditions.
