Red rash around the mouth (perioral dermatitis)

    • Perioral dermatitis causes the skin around your mouth to become inflamed with redness and rashes that look like pimples. It can be a reaction to certain face creams or long time use of steroid creams. Perioral dermatitis can be a long-term illness and can re-occur after treatment.

      The main symptom of this condition is a red (in fairer skin) or darker (in colored skin) rash around the mouth. The rash may be itchy, flaky or dry.

    • You will have:

      • Redness or darker skin around your mouth.
      • Peeling of the skin around your mouth.
      • Rashes filled with pus.
      • Itching of the affected area.
    • What are the causes?

    • Perioral dermatitis can be caused by:

      • Steroid creams.
      • Steroid nasal sprays.
      • Harsh or heavy creams bleaching creams.
      • Reaction to make-up or harsh soaps.

    • You are more at risk of perioral dermatitis if you:

      • Are female between 20-45 years.
      • Use steroid creams or nasal sprays.
      • Have allergies.
      • Are using hormonal contraceptive pills.
      • Use toothpaste that contains fluoride.
      • Use harsh make-up and face cleansers.
      • Are having medical conditions whereby you drool saliva a lot.

    • You should visit your doctor if you develop any rashes around your mouth.

    • How to prevent?

      • Avoid using steroid creams for longer than two weeks.
      • Avoid using bleaching creams, soaps, or make-up once you notice any skin reactions.
      • Stress can make your immune cells recognize common substances as dangerous. Manage your stress by eating a balanced diet (including plenty of fruits and vegetables), drinking lots of water and remaining physically active.

    • Self-care tips:

      • Avoid scrubbing your skin.
      • Get rid of steroid creams or nasal sprays.
      • Stop using cosmetics, creams and products that contain fragrances. Coconut oil, shea butter or petroleum jelly are usually free of added fragrance and less likely to worsen your rash.
      • Avoid eating hot and spicy foods that can come in contact with the skin around your mouth.
      • Wear cotton clothing that covers your hands and feet.
